DNA profiling & Genetic profiling is the science of identifying individual genetic characteristics by way of personal DNA analysis or DNA profile. Through dna profiling & genetic profiling researchers are able to individually map a person's DNA, providing insight into the person's future in terms of health, athletic performance, potential for developing certain diseases & other elements of a dna profile. While genetic science has been around for some time, its application in the area of personalized genetics is only just beginning.

The Human Genome Project, a thirteen year project funded by the National Institute of Health and the U.S. Department of Energy worked to identify all 20,000-25,000 genes present in human DNA, determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA, store the information in databases and improve tools available for data analysis. The purpose of the Human Genome Project was to identify what exactly makes humans human. Genetic profiling illustrates what makes you, you.

Genetic profiling involves the analysis of genes for sequence variations that have clinically or otherwise been determined to be relevant in identifying individual characteristics or as a determinant or predisposing factor in health and disease. While single variations are rarely sufficient to impact health, personalized genetics relies on a broader examination of mutations that are found in a greater population segments. To accomplish this, CyGene has developed genetic profiling "panels" that analyze various mutations rather one variation in order to make results applicable to the broader population.

To create these panels, CyGene has grouped various mutations together when they share a link to the same or similar disorder or trait. To be included in a panel, CyGene only looks at mutations that are prevalent in at least 2% of the general population. Many of the mutations which indicate a predisposition for serious illness are prevalent in 5-10% of the population. By combining 4-5 mutations into a single panel, the results now become applicable to 10-50% of the population. This greatly increases the likelihood that the personal DNA analysis will be relevant to a large segment of the general population and it definitely could be relevant to you.

Genetic Profiling Results
What does your dna profile say about you?

Genetic profiling results do not necessary have a negative implication, and predictive dna profiles do not suggest that one will definitively develop a disease. They do however indicate that there is an increased likelihood of a particular condition, especially in combination with other factors such as a family history, environment, nutrition and other personal health factors such as weight, blood pressure, etc. Possessing this knowledge can help people with hereditary risk factors make lifestyle choices that benefit their overall health and reduce their chances of developing a serious health condition just because it is "in their genes".
