Los Angeles Times asks CyGene President Martin Munzer to Weigh in on Jamaican Sprinter Usain BoltCategory: Media Room | Permalink Published: Friday, September 04, 2009
CyGene Laboratories is recognized as the industry leading in athletic performance testing, helping everyone from professional athletes to weekend warriors achieve their optimal athletic goals. As a testament to the company's reputation, CyGene President Martin Munzer was recently quoted in a Los Angeles Times article weighing in on the athletic prowess of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. At 6-feet-5, Bolt's un-sprinter-like build yet world record setting performances have challenged traditional thinking about what makes a good sprinter. Competing against shorter, stockier athletes, the laws of physics would suggest Bolt is at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to getting up to speed quickly, a necessity in sprints, and not losing steam toward the end as sprinters can be inclined to do. Experts in the field of exercise science pointed to Bolt's physical movements and whether or not he engaged in "dorsiflexion" the practice of flexing the foot toward the shin. But even those experts disagreed on whether dorsiflexion was good or bad for a sprinter and the Times article raised the question of whether Bolt carried the ACTN3 gene, sometimes referred to as the speed gene, which other elite athletes have been found to possess. "There's no question in my mind that he's going to have a convergence of certain genetics that contribute to his success," Munzer is quoted as saying. But Munzer is also quick to point out that genetics tell only part of the story. "You can affect the existing genes by switching them on and off through dietary or environment effects, like smoking." The Los Angeles Times article captures the essence of why personalized genetic testing is so important for athletes looking to understand how their bodies can work. Munzer goes on to say, "Just because you have a genetic profile it doesn't predestine you to anything." In other words, having the right genes for athletic success may be moot if the athlete a) doesn't know he possesses these genes and b) doesn't understand that diet and environmental influences affect the performance of these genes in the overall body. Usain Bolt is one of the fastest men alive despite his body-type, sending the message that there is more to athletic performance than height, weight and muscle composition. The athletic performance panels offered by CyGene Laboratories offer insight into some of those other factors and help athletes reach their peak performance goals.
