DNA Decoded – Bicycling Magazine Highlights CyGene’s Athletic Performance Genetic Testing PanelsCategory: Media Room | Permalink Published: Wednesday, August 12, 2009
CyGene Laboratories has been helping athletes achieve their optimal athletic performance for nearly 15 years by offering personalized genetic testing that focuses on performance-related genes, pointing professional athletes and weekend warriors alike toward athletic success. Now CyGene's athletic performance genetic tests are being recognized as the industry leaders in predictive genotyping. The September, 2009 issue of Bicycling Magazine, a monthly publication with a circulation of 410,000 cycling enthusiasts ranging from Tour de France professionals to extreme downhill mountain bikers, does an excellent job of covering the topic of performance-related genetic testing in their cover listed story, "DNA Decoded" by Dimitry McDowell. Focusing on the benefits of athletic performance genetic testing, the article highlights the genetic differences between real-life father and son cyclists and explains how CyGene's athletic performance panels point to different measures of athletic success for each one. Wired for SuccessThe test subjects, father Ned and son Rhyler Overend of Durango, CO, each submitted a CyGene Laboratories Athletic Performance Panel cheek swab and compared their results. Even though Ned, 53, was World Downhill Champion in 1987, could Rhyler, 18, measure up? According to their results, both Overends carried ACE II genes, which are linked to easily dilated blood vessels, a hypothetical indicator of endurance sport prowess. From one genetic standpoint, Rhyler has a leg up on the competition simply because of his DNA. Red FlagThe article also pointed to a potential red flag for Rhyler, discovered when CyGene looked at the APOE gene, linked to late-onset Alzheimer's disease and possibly tied to sports-related head trauma. Rhyler's APOE contained a copy known as E4, found in over 50% of late-onset Alzheimer's patients. According to the article, if Rhyler were to hit his head while flying 40 mph down a mountainside, he was 40% more likely to have a moderate or severe concussion, take longer to recover, and possibly, 30 years later, suffer increased likelihood of developing some kind of cognitive deficits than someone without the E4 copy. Can Genes Resolve a Years-Long Argument?Aside from the Overend's personalized genetics, the article included a sidebar which looked at two friends who have been riding together for years. They wanted to know which one was the "worse" rider. Each of them submitted a CyGene athletic performance panel and sat together a week later to check their results online. They found one of them was better suited to endurance rather than power, which didn't surprise the guy getting dropped on the hills. The two left their genetic testing experience feeling they had new insights to help them perform better on the bike. In addition to helping athletes maximize their performance potential, CyGene Laboratories offers personalized genetics testing panels that screen for possible risk factors leading to glaucoma, deep vein thrombosis, osteoporosis and heart disease.
