Interest in CyGene DNA Consumer Testing Products Increases After Recent Media Coverage

Category: Press Releases  |  Permalink

Published: Wednesday, May 12, 2010

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla., May 12, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- CyGene Laboratories Inc. (Pink Sheets:CYGE) today announced that it has experienced unprecedented levels of interest and requests for information following recent media coverage of Walgreens' (WAG 36.57, +0.40, +1.11%) decision to offer genetic testing kits supplied by Pathway Genomics in certain of their retail stores.

"Our phone has been ringing off the hook," said Martin Munzer, CEO of CyGene Laboratories. "Since the news broke, we have been inundated with calls and emails. People are suddenly very interested in the whole world of at-home genetic testing. While we do not comment on specific competitors and their products, it's important that we point out our own distinctive competencies and make clear the benefits of our technology and testing methodology as well as our position regarding the key issues affecting our industry."

Looking to address the heightened interest in CyGene's products, Mr. Munzer issued the following statement:

"CyGene has been offering direct-to-consumer DNA testing since 2004. Our products are purely predictive, meaning they are not diagnostic tests. We have designed and filed patents on methods and procedures that provide an ethical and economic way of making genetic information available for the benefit and private use of our clients. Most importantly, our testing is anonymous, not just confidential -- a critical factor when considering all the information that can be harvested from the human genome. The results of our tests are actionable, but in a positive way: We do not scare consumers into taking radical, irreversible measures to reduce a possible risk based on inconclusive or partial information.

"There are many issues related to this 'brave new world' of genomics that yet need to be resolved, such as the patenting of genes. Many companies have been issued patents and actually 'own' some genes, as in the case of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which may increase the risk of developing breast cancer. By way of these rights, companies are denying access to the use of these genes to others for testing and even for the development of drugs to modify the function of the genes. As a result, in our opinion, some companies are overcharging the public for testing, while overstating the real value of their genetic markers. CyGene has been a staunch opponent of gene patenting. Our position on this issue is clear and a matter of public record as I have written letters for use by members of Congress sponsoring bills attempting to repeal the laws that permit the patenting of human or other genes."

Los Angeles Times asks CyGene President Martin Munzer to Weigh in on Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt

CyGene Laboratories is recognized as the industry leading in athletic performance testing, helping everyone from professional athletes to weekend warriors achieve their optimal athletic goals. As a testament to the company's reputation, CyGene President Martin Munzer was recently quoted in a Los Angeles Times article weighing in on the athletic prowess of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.

At 6-feet-5, Bolt's un-sprinter-like build yet world record setting performances have challenged traditional thinking about what makes a good sprinter. Competing against shorter, stockier athletes, the laws of physics would suggest Bolt is at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to getting up to speed quickly, a necessity in sprints, and not losing steam toward the end as sprinters can be inclined to do.

Experts in the field of exercise science pointed to Bolt's physical movements and whether or not he engaged in "dorsiflexion" the practice of flexing the foot toward the shin. But even those experts disagreed on whether dorsiflexion was good or bad for a sprinter and the Times article raised the question of whether Bolt carried the ACTN3 gene, sometimes referred to as the speed gene, which other elite athletes have been found to possess.

"There's no question in my mind that he's going to have a convergence of certain genetics that contribute to his success," Munzer is quoted as saying. But Munzer is also quick to point out that genetics tell only part of the story. "You can affect the existing genes by switching them on and off through dietary or environment effects, like smoking."

The Los Angeles Times article captures the essence of why personalized genetic testing is so important for athletes looking to understand how their bodies can work. Munzer goes on to say, "Just because you have a genetic profile it doesn't predestine you to anything." In other words, having the right genes for athletic success may be moot if the athlete a) doesn't know he possesses these genes and b) doesn't understand that diet and environmental influences affect the performance of these genes in the overall body.

Usain Bolt is one of the fastest men alive despite his body-type, sending the message that there is more to athletic performance than height, weight and muscle composition. The athletic performance panels offered by CyGene Laboratories offer insight into some of those other factors and help athletes reach their peak performance goals.
